Love story

I think our friend Tabita, from Surabaya, said it best. It was our first day in Surabaya and our team had been asked to the hospital to pray for Rian, a sick orphan from the cemetery. At the close of our prayer with him, members of our team were approached by family of other patients, most of them Muslim, to pray for their sick loved ones as well. Invitations for prayer kept coming so our team continued praying, traveling from bedside to bedside with compassion, hushed voices and healing faith. Walking out of the hospital together, Tabita spoke words that, I believe, express the resounding truth of our entire trip “I think God himself has made the schedule for your team.”

Mill Creek Foursquare sent nine of their best. These new friends came with eyes to see the beautiful thing God is doing in Yellow Flower Cemetery and quickly became part of it.

Our first steps on cemetery grounds were among the 70 orphans living hidden among the graves there and then to the meeting place of our beloved friends, the cemetery sex workers.  We were welcomed warmly, as we always are, but there was something different in this reception than I have experienced there before.

Love is changing things. Walls are crumbling and friendship is forming. Our relationships in the cemetery have evolved from women and children seated and huddled to hear from us to welcomes into their homes and invitation to hear from them. They are telling their stories and are hungry for change.

The women are vulnerable and bold in their pleas. ..

“Please pray that my daughter finds a good husband so she can stop working as a prostitute”

“Please pray that I can find a different way of life than this one that brings me so much shame.”

“Please tell me what you know about Jesus.”

Yellow Flower has asked nothing from us. The women are largely unaware of the behind the scene conversations we are having on their behalf. (We are working toward offering them business education, micro-capital loans and opportunities for discipleship.) They do know, however, that we love them and it seems they are beginning to love us back.

The love story in Yellow Flower continues to unfold and I cannot wait see what’s next.

  1. I am anticipating that the love you offer will multiply in ways that you can’t even begin to imagine today. Why would our Great God do anything less?

  2. This so touches my heart, sweet Val. I appreciate you! Glenice Valerie Bellamy posted: “I think our friend Tabita, from Surabaya, said it best.
